The Captain, The Missionary, and the Bell: The Wreck of the Steamship Atlantic – Lecture & Book Signing with Capt. Eric Larsson of American Cruise Lines
Lecture
2 hours 2 pm
The Captain: Isaac “Kip” Dustan, a well-respected mariner whose adventures were frequently recounted in the mid-1800s New York newspapers…The Missionary: Rev. Benjamin C.C. Parker of the Young Men’s Church Missionary Society of the City of New York. The Bell from the Atlantic: Contains a history that spans more than one and a half centuries. On Wednesday, November 25, 1846, the steamer Atlantic left Allyn Point headed for New London, Connecticut. Less than an hour later, a steam pipe exploded, disabling the engine and leaving the Atlantic at the mercy of the winds and seas as it dragged anchor across a tempestuous Long Island Sound towards a rocky reef off Fishers Island. This true story follows the events of the twenty-seven hours following the explosion as well as the harrowing stories of many of the passengers that sailed aboard the Atlantic that fateful night. So much of life is about connections, seemingly chance meetings, lives intersecting with others, and encounters that could be luck, fate, coincidence, or faith. The wreck of the steamship Atlantic links the captain of that ill-fated ship to the missionary of the Young Men’s Church Missionary Society of the City of New York and the bell from that ship, creating ripples that are still felt today.

The Forgotten Borough’s Forgotten Industry: The History Of Lighthouses On Staten Island

In our digital age, lighthouses are perhaps known better for providing Instagram content from a New England getaway than for their original function. But behind those picturesque vistas lies a piece of American history that was essential to the founding of the new nation. Today there are 400 active lighthouses in the U.S., and New York City has its own unique history as a center for the luminous navigational beacons. Read more here.

City to construct statue of late lighthouse keeper Katherine Walker at Ferry landing

STATEN ISLAND — New York City will construct a statue of the late Robbins Reef Lighthouse keeper Katherine Walker at the Staten Island Ferry landing.

The construction, announced by First Lady Chirlane McCray and former Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen on Wednesday, is part of the city’s push to honor women who have helped shape New York City, as well as address the lack of female statues in public places. Read more here.

Saturday, June 17, 2017:

Nearly 150 lighthouse enthusiasts joined our Second Annual Sunset Cruise. The changing weather gave us a good opportunity to see, and hear, why lighthouses are so important in foggy weather, not just looking beautiful in good weather. We were able to see the lights in operation, guiding the way around obstructions to safety.
Captain John detoured to give us nice views of the South Street Seaport, and the lightship Ambrose, the Brooklyn Bridge, then a nice sunset as we passed the Statue of Liberty.

Our next big event will be a repeat of the popular Circumnavigation of Staten Island tour, Sunday July 16, leaving from Pier One, outside the National Lighthouse Museum.
Mark your calendar for Lighthouse & Lightship Recognition Weekend, August 4th to 6th!

The Museum will be closed Independence Day, Tuesday, July 4th.

Sunday, June 25, 2017:

Perfect early-Summer weather greeted our guests for a new kind of event for your National Lighthouse Museum! Andrew Wilson, historian, sailor and librarian at the New York Public Library, gave a fascinating talk about the history of the America’s Cup, and its connection to Staten Island. Few in the audience knew that Staten Island had so many yacht clubs in the past, and that so many of them sent competitors to races around the world. The New York Yacht Club Regatta, held just off the Stapleton waterfront, and out through The Narrows, was a preliminary race, and even trans-Atlantic races started here. Often these would attract more than 100,000 spectators. He also told us about some Staten Island area lighthouses that no longer exist.
If you want to learn more about the America’s Cup history, read Andrew Wilson’s blog here: Andrew Wilson Blog Part One and Andrew Willson Blog Part Two

That wasn’t all!

Before, during, and after the talk, Chefs Al Curtis and Kathy Contino manned the grill, and we all enjoyed lots of food, outside watching the ships entering and leaving the harbor, or inside during the presentation.

But wait! There’s more!

We were able to watch two of the actual races, by live video feed to our big screen. During the intermission, we were treated to an explanation of how these new vessels differ so much from the yachts that we were accustomed to seeing in the past.
