SUMMARY:Lighthouse Weekend Signature Tour to Sandy Hook & Twin Lights
DESCRIPTION:Popularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour\, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor. The series will be narrated by Wade R. Goria. Wade is a National Lighthouse Museum historian\, author\, and former New York University professor. \nWe explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth\, the Coney Island Lighthouse\, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses\, the Sandy Hook Light\, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands\, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill\, the New Dorp Light\, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field\, also located in New Dorp.\nAfter sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows\, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands. \nEnroute to the Sandy Hook Light\, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock\, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor\, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries. \nCruising on the Ambrose Channel\, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo\, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill\, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico. The Atlantic Highlands is home to one of the most spectaular lighthouses in America: the Navesink Twin Light Station\, the very first structure in America witnessed by immigrants following an Atlantic crossing. \nUpon our return along the Ambrose Channel into Lower New York Bay\, we head near to the Coney Island Lighthouse at Norton’s Point in Seagate\, Coney Island\, where famed Keeper Frank Schubert\, NYC’s last Light Keeper\, resided for 40 years. \nTickets are non-refundable. \nLighthouse Boat Tours commence rain or shine. \nThe boat leaves from the National Lighthouse Museum. DESCRIPTION:This first talk explores how Alexander Hamilton’s creation of the Revenue Marine —later known as the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service— and the work of early customs officers made Staten Island a key state and federal maritime outpost in the early republic.  Focusing on an 1814 act that converted St. Andrews Church glebe at the Watering Place (present day Tompkinsville/St. George) into state and federal quarantine grounds\, the talk will discuss how cutter operations\, quarantine policy\, and public health helped secure American commerce and shape the island’s emergence as a center of federal authority. Although intended to protect the port and the nation’s commerce from the importation of infectious disease\, the 1814 act also planted the seeds for the growth of Tompkinsville ultimately fueling fear and resistance that culminated in the violent destruction of the state Quarantine Ground. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito is a Professor of Psychology at Seton Hall University recently retired from his full-time position after 33 years of teaching and now serves as a part-time senior scientist in Seton Hall’s Institute of Neuroimmune Pharmacology. DESCRIPTION:This talk traces Staten Island’s role in American public health and safety\, beginning with the world-renowned Dr. Benjamin Rush and local leadership spearheaded by Dr. Richard Bayley\, first health officer of the NY State Quarantine and Marine Hospital established at the Watering Place. We will journey outward to nearby Staten Island places such as the Seamen’s Retreat to the south—later a federal research laboratory and a U.S. Marine Hospital at the forefront of identifying and treating infectious disease.  The journey then moves inland to Sea View Hospital\, site of a landmark antibiotic trial for the cure of tuberculosis and the discovery of the first antidepressant drug. The talk will also spotlight Joseph Henry\, eminent scientist and inaugural director of the Smithsonian\, whose experiments at the U.S. Lighthouse Service Depot transformed lighthouse illumination and foghorn design\, strengthening navigational safety for seafarers nationwide.
