DESCRIPTION:With speaker Dr. Michael Vigorito \nProfessor Joseph Henry (1797–1878)\, a pioneering American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, made significant contributions to both scientific innovation and public service.  \nAt the U.S. Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island\, Henry spearheaded efforts to modernize America’s lighthouse system. His experiments and innovations enhanced maritime safety by improving lighthouse technology.  \nHenry also recognized the importance of meteorological data for public safety\, laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau. His contributions reflect a legacy of using science to advance both public welfare and knowledge\, particularly at the intersection of maritime safety and meteorology. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito has been a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at Seton Hall University since 1989. Part modern-day adventure film\, part visual tone poem\, “Antarctic Voyage” sheds a light on the current state of the polar region’s majestic wildlife\, and the intrepid explorers who are dedicated to preserving and understanding what remains of our fragile\, vital natural world\, all through a refreshingly unconventional manner from the standard nature documentary genre. \nOriginally from Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, Kevin Schreck is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and film educator currently living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. He was the recipient of both the Jerome Hill Award for Exceptional Work in the Documentary Tradition and the recipient of the Award for Contribution to the Film and Electronic Arts Department of Bard College in 2011.\nAt the age of 23\, Kevin’s first major feature-length documentary\, “Persistence of Vision” (2012)\, made its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival\, and has since screened at over 100 international film festivals and institutions to virtually universal acclaim. His subsequent films include “Tangent Realms: The Worlds of C.M. Kösemen” (2018) and “The Duck of New York” (2023). Kevin’s next film is “Enongo” (2025)\, a feature-length\, documentary-animation hybrid about a young woman rapper\, producer and Ph.D. candidate\, Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo\, better known by her stage persona\, “Sammus.” \nAs an educator\, Kevin has led filmmaking masterclasses and guest lectures at major universities and colleges in Australia\, Denmark\, and across the United States. Since early 2018\, he has been a teaching artist and mentor at Reel Works\, a non-profit\, after school program which provides free film education to New York students from underrepresented communities and low-income backgrounds. DESCRIPTION:Popularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour\, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor. The series will be narrated by Wade R. Goria. Wade is a National Lighthouse Museum historian\, author\, and former New York University professor. \nWe explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth\, the Coney Island Lighthouse\, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses\, the Sandy Hook Light\, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands\, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill\, the New Dorp Light\, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field\, also located in New Dorp.\nAfter sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows\, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands. \nEnroute to the Sandy Hook Light\, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock\, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor\, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries. \nCruising on the Ambrose Channel\, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo\, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill\, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico.
