SUMMARY:Fathom
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit runs from December 14th to January 8th \nOpening reception on December 14th from 5pm- 7pm \nFathom is a video installation that explores the mercurial experience of time passing and the impermanence of life. Set in a dreamlike\, transitional space—part waiting room\, part ship at sea—the work evokes a sense of suspension\, with figures paused\, waiting\, and watching. Through their actions\, the boundaries between measuring time and space blur\, reflecting the paradox that after events pass\, only memories persist\, hovering between the tangible and the ephemeral. \nThe title\, Fathom\, embodies this duality. Rooted in its nautical origins as a unit of depth—once defined by the span of a sailor’s outstretched arms—it also invites the viewer to “fathom” or contemplate the immeasurable: time\, memory\, and absence. The work is both a meditation and a memento mori\, like staring at the sea—immense\, beautiful\, unknowable. \nAbout the Artist: Caleb Hammond is a creator of performance and visual art. He is an actor\, director\, and video and installation artist whose work has been performed and exhibited nationally and internationally. In his original works\, he explores fragmented and layered imagery\, using multiple exposure techniques to create environments that shift and slip\, providing viewers with surprising\, multifaceted experiences. His work examines the scale and shape of the spaces we inhabit\, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior\, monumental and mundane events\, expansive and empty spaces\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:Professor Joseph Henry and His Work with the USLHS Depot
DESCRIPTION:With speaker Dr. Michael Vigorito \nProfessor Joseph Henry (1797–1878)\, a pioneering American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, made significant contributions to both scientific innovation and public service. \nAt the U.S. Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island\, Henry spearheaded efforts to modernize America’s lighthouse system. His experiments and innovations enhanced maritime safety by improving lighthouse technology. \nHenry also recognized the importance of meteorological data for public safety\, laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau. His contributions reflect a legacy of using science to advance both public welfare and knowledge\, particularly at the intersection of maritime safety and meteorology. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito has been a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at Seton Hall University since 1989. He received his doctorate in Experimental Psychology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and post-doctoral training in behavioral pharmacology at Rutgers University. \nPurchase Ticket!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.

SUMMARY:"Antarctic Voyage" Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:An Endless Inspirational Muse for Artists and Scientists\nPresented by College of Staten Island Faculty:\nDr. Robert Marraccino\, Dr. Richard Veit and Kevin Schreck \nDon’t miss opportunity to see the Melting Age Exhibit! \n“Antarctic Voyage” is a new documentary from award-winning filmmaker Kevin Schreck about a biological research expedition to the remote island of South Georgia\, starring charismatic field biologist\, Dr. Samantha Monier. Part modern-day adventure film\, part visual tone poem\, “Antarctic Voyage” sheds a light on the current state of the polar region’s majestic wildlife\, and the intrepid explorers who are dedicated to preserving and understanding what remains of our fragile\, vital natural world\, all through a refreshingly unconventional manner from the standard nature documentary genre. \nOriginally from Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, Kevin Schreck is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and film educator currently living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. He was the recipient of both the Jerome Hill Award for Exceptional Work in the Documentary Tradition and the recipient of the Award for Contribution to the Film and Electronic Arts Department of Bard College in 2011.\nAt the age of 23\, Kevin’s first major feature-length documentary\, “Persistence of Vision” (2012)\, made its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival\, and has since screened at over 100 international film festivals and institutions to virtually universal acclaim. His subsequent films include “Tangent Realms: The Worlds of C.M. Kösemen” (2018) and “The Duck of New York” (2023). Kevin’s next film is “Enongo” (2025)\, a feature-length\, documentary-animation hybrid about a young woman rapper\, producer and Ph.D. candidate\, Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo\, better known by her stage persona\, “Sammus.” \nAs an educator\, Kevin has led filmmaking masterclasses and guest lectures at major universities and colleges in Australia\, Denmark\, and across the United States. Since early 2018\, he has been a teaching artist and mentor at Reel Works\, a non-profit\, after school program which provides free film education to New York students from underrepresented communities and low-income backgrounds. Kevin was also the Visiting Documentary \nPurchase Tickets!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.

SUMMARY:Lighthouse Weekend Signature Tour to Sandy Hook & Twin Lights
DESCRIPTION:Popularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour\, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor. The series will be narrated by Wade R. Goria. Wade is a National Lighthouse Museum historian\, author\, and former New York University professor. \nWe explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth\, the Coney Island Lighthouse\, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses\, the Sandy Hook Light\, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands\, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill\, the New Dorp Light\, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field\, also located in New Dorp.\nAfter sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows\, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands. \nEnroute to the Sandy Hook Light\, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock\, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor\, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries. \nCruising on the Ambrose Channel\, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo\, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill\, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico. The Atlantic Highlands is home to one of the most spectaular lighthouses in America: the Navesink Twin Light Station\, the very first structure in America witnessed by immigrants following an Atlantic crossing. \nUpon our return along the Ambrose Channel into Lower New York Bay\, we head near to the Coney Island Lighthouse at Norton’s Point in Seagate\, Coney Island\, where famed Keeper Frank Schubert\, NYC’s last Light Keeper\, resided for 40 years. \nTickets are non-refundable. \nLighthouse Boat Tours commence rain or shine. \nThe boat leaves from the National Lighthouse Museum. Admission to Museum is FREE for Boat Tour ticketholders. Please call the museum at 718-390-0040 for further information if needed. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:New York’s Lighthouses
DESCRIPTION:By Semine Hazar and Barbara Todd\, Award Winning Artists\nArtist Reception: Friday\, October 3 from 5-7 pm\nin collaboration with the National Lighthouse Museum\nExhibit from September 6 – December 13\, 2025 \nNew York’s Lighthouses celebrates the state’s historic lighthouses—recognized for their architectural charm\, symbolic power\, and breathtaking settings. Once essential to maritime navigation\, trade\, and transportation\, many of these landmarks are now lovingly preserved and open to the public\, evoking themes of hope\, guidance\, and resilience. \nThrough Semine Hazar’s expressive paintings and Barbara Todd’s evocative photography\, the exhibition captures the lighthouses’ enduring presence in New York’s coastal landscapes and their deep connection to the region’s maritime heritage. The exhibition showcases their distinct yet complementary artistic styles\, offering unique interpretations of the iconic lighthouses of New York. \nThe show also draws inspiration from the Hudson River School\, America’s first art movement\, which celebrated the natural beauty of the Northeast and aligns with the National Lighthouse Museum’s mission to preserve and honor these coastal treasures. \n  \n
