SUMMARY:Living Breakwaters Project: Presentation and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Paul Alter\, RA\, AIA\, Principal Architect with SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership\, sailor/captain of the 47’ sloop “Signorina” out of Sag Harbor\, NY\, lighthouse enthusiast\, environmentalist and passionate appreciator of islands\, the ocean and global sustainability will moderate a presentation/discussion on Sunday\, April 3\, 2022 about the Living Breakwaters Project which is currently being constructed off the southern coast of Staten Island.  The presentation panel will have senior designer\, Tami Banh of SCAPE Landscape Architecture speaking about the design and Matthew Clark\, the Baird senior coastal resident engineer in charge of the construction speaking about the challenges of implementation. This event will include visual and narrative presentations and a question / answer period to encourage audience participation. \nLiving Breakwaters is an innovative coastal green infrastructure project consisting of 2\,400 linear feet of near-shore breakwaters—partially submerged structures built of stone and ecologically-enhanced concrete. The breakwaters are designed to reduce the impact of climate-intensified weather events on the low-lying coastal community of Tottenville\, which experienced some of the most damaging waves in the region and tragic loss of life during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Informed by extensive hydrodynamic modeling\, the breakwaters are also designed to slow and\, eventually\, reverse decades of beach erosion along the Tottenville shoreline. \nThe breakwaters will also be constructed with “reef ridges” and “reef streets” that provide diverse habitat space\, with live oyster installation expected to follow construction completion in 2024. Living Breakwaters was initially developed by SCAPE Landscape Architecture for the Rebuild by Design (RBD) Competition\, a design competition held by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to seek cutting edge ideas for coastal resilience in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The project is being implemented by the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery. \nPurchase Ticekts

SUMMARY:Queen Elizabeth 2:  Ship Of Legend with Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\, in person and Zoom \nWhen the original Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth were retired in the late Sixties\, it was largely believed crossing the Atlantic by ocean liner was over. The airlines had taken as much as 98% of all passengers. But Britain’s Cunard Line felt differently and built one last Atlantic super liner. Thus\, came the ship which became the most successful liner of all time\, the Queen Elizabeth 2.  Fondly known as the QE2\, she went on to sail for 39 years\, steamed more miles\, visited more ports and carried more passengers than any other liner of her kind. Now residing as a hotel & museum out in Dubai\, Bill Miller will review the ship’s long and colorful history. \nBill Miller\, known as Mr. Ocean Liner\, has written over 100 books on passenger ships.  He is also a popular guest speaker on modern-day cruise ships\, having made hundreds of voyages and visited ports from Alaska to Antarctica. He has also hosted ocean liner events at Lincoln Center\, been a curator at South Street Seaport\, appeared in numerous television programs\, and been the recipient of numerous awards. His life has been the subject of a TV documentary aptly titled Mr Ocean Liner and available on Amazon Prime. \nPurchase Tckets

SUMMARY:The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 - Movie Screening and Discussion with Director Josh Zeman
DESCRIPTION:This is a in person event \nIn 1989 the U.S. Navy detected a mysterious signal in the Pacific Ocean. The unidentifiable sound\, picked up by a top secret\, Cold War-era surveillance system designed to track enemy submarines\, vibrated through the depths at an enigmatic 52 hertz. The noise was definitely not a submarine. \nAfter months of study\, Dr. William Watkins of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts concluded this strange subaquatic rumble belonged to a whale calling out in a distinctive frequency\, nothing like other whales who moved in similar migratory patterns. A whale’s call is social\, but no response was ever recorded. Watkins surmised that this singular creature\, nicknamed “52\,” was solitary and unique\, possibly the first or last of his kind\, a whale unable to find a mate or bond with others of his species. \nWatkins tracked 52’s song for the next 12 years\, and in 2004 the whale was profiled in The New York Times. Readers around the world were spellbound by 52’s plight. Some sociologists theorized that our fascination with his story came from a growing feeling of loneliness overrunning our techno-centric society. \nThe Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 examines the Cold War science of submarine warfare that led to the discovery of 52\, the centuries of brutal whale hunting that brought many species to the brink of extinction\, the discovery of haunting and complex whale songs that prompted a worldwide effort to save them\, the growing scourge of ocean noise that disrupts the lives of whales today\, and whether society’s dependence on technology is actually isolating humans from one another. \nIf 52 is still out there\, can he be found? Is it possible to launch a search for one whale in the vastness of the world’s oceans? In the journey and the potential discovery of 52\, the filmmakers take us on an exhilarating adventure toward understanding this unique creature and its link to humanity. \nPurchase Tickets
