SUMMARY:The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis
DESCRIPTION:Author Maria Smilios Book Signing & Q&A\n2:00pm-4:00pm\nPresentation at 2:30pm\nStaten Islanders were always the beacons of light and hope. The National Lighthouse Museum is located at the site of the Quarantine (1799-1858) which was the first municipal complex of hospitals and convalescent facilities to receive and detain the sick and dying immigrants\, entering New York Harbor. Heroic Staten Islanders accepted the onerous burden to care for these immigrants. \nThe inspirational author\, Maria Smilios of The Black Angels will be at the National Lighthouse Museum to discuss another Staten Island\, municipal hospital\, Sea View Hospital (1913-1961) which was pivotal in controlling the tuberculosis (T.B.) epidemic in N.Y.C. Maria recounts the story of the critical role of Southern\, Black nurses in the managed care at Sea View Hospital for the incurable\, patients with the wasting disease\, tuberculosis (T.B.). Later by 1940’s\, these “Black Angels” brought the cure of T.B. to the nation. \nMaria Smilios was born and raised in New York City. In 2016\, while working as a developmental editor for Springer Science she learned about this extraordinary story and became determined to tell it. She holds a Master of Arts in American literature and religion from Boston University where she was a Luce scholar and taught in the religion and writing program. Her work has appeared in The Guardian\, Narratively\, The Forward\, Lit Hub\, Writers Digest\, Dame Magazine\, The Rumpus\, and other publications. \n The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis is her first book. \nYou can find Maria at mariasmilios.com \nGet your tickets today!

SUMMARY:Iron & Ice: The Full Tale of the Titanic Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Talk & Book Signing with Author Kelly Skwarcan \nIron & Ice: The Full Tale of the Titanic is sure to captivate both those with no prior knowledge of the ship and long-time enthusiasts. Narrative in nature\, character-driven\, and tastefully detailed\, Iron & Ice is set apart by its exploration of previously-glossed-over topics and its fresh perspective on familiar ones. This book explores the Titanic’s “best-of” narratives\, divulges little-known facts\, and simplifies pedantic technicalities to render the iconic tale engaging and meaningful to the modern reader. \nWith Iron & Ice\, readers embark on a spellbinding journey that begins before the Titanic’s first sketches and ends over a century later in summer 2023. As one of the first books to connect the eerie parallels between OceanGate’s Titan submersible’s implosion and the Titanic disaster\, Iron & Ice forges new ground\, enthralling readers all the while. \nKelly Skwarcan is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame this year with plans to pursue graduate degrees in performance\, and thereafter\, counseling psychology. She is looking forward to a career intertwining her long-time love of the Titanic with the psychology of performance in deep-ocean exploration and submergence expeditions. \nGet your tickets today!

SUMMARY:Paintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Lighthouses of the United States\nPaintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit \nApril 28-May 26\, 2024\nOpening Reception April 28th at 2pm \nAlfred La Banca was born in New York City in 1930. His family spent summers in New Dorp\, Staten Island\, and so began his love for coastal communities. He owned three IOR-rated sailboats and competed from Maine to Florida – including Newport\, Annapolis\, Fort Lauderdale and Key West. \nLighthouses were his passion. He called them the “Vanishing Castles of America”. Sadly\, these beautiful marine castles are disappearing\, often abandoned or destroyed. It was the hope of Alfred LaBanca to rekindle America’s passion with lighthouses through his beautiful watercolor paintings. \nHis work has been selected for Ritz Carlton Hotels\, York Wallpaper and many local art shows. \nHe was a member of the United States Airforce\, New York Yacht Club\, New York Athletic Club Yacht Club\, Corinthians\, Storm Trysail Club and the Noroton Yacht Club. \nThe La Banca Lighthouse Collection has over 250 paintings. We hope you enjoy viewing this wonderful collection and perhaps think of Al LaBanca when you see a lighthouse.

SUMMARY:Storytime Hour: Reading of Kate's Light
DESCRIPTION:Readings at 11am and 12pm \nReading of Kate’s Light\, a story about Kate Walker at Robbin’s Reef Lighthouse by Elizabeth Spires (Author)\, Emily Arnold McCully (Illustrator). \nLiving in the isolated Robbins Reef Lighthouse\, overlooking turn-of-the-century New York Harbor\, Kate Walker spent her life minding the light\, keeping passing ships from running aground on the dangerous shoals. Originally the assistant to her lighthouse keeper husband John Walker\, after his death Kate convinced the Lighthouse Board that she was able to manage the hard work on her own. \nFor more than three decades\, Kate lived a solitary life\, often totally isolated from the mainland by rough seas and dangerous storms. Tending to the lamps and ringing the heavy warning bell\, she helped ships avert disaster– and saved many sailors from the cold\, choppy waters when disaster struck. \nElizabeth Spires describes the joys and hardships of a life at sea\, detailing pivotal moments in Walker’s life to show her indomitable spirit\, and celebrates the determination that drove Kate to keep her home and her livelihood. Paired with Emily Arnold McCully’s atmospheric\, vivid watercolor-and-ink illustrations of lonely lighthouses\, sun-dappled afternoons\, and wrathful storms\, this gripping picture book brings turn of the century New York to life. \nBooks will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Lighthouse Weekend Signature Tour!
DESCRIPTION:Popularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour\, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor. The series will be narrated by Wade R. Goria. Wade is a National Lighthouse Museum historian\, author\, and former New York University professor. \nWe explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth\, the Coney Island Lighthouse\, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses\, the Sandy Hook Light\, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands\, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill\, the New Dorp Light\, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field\, also located in New Dorp. \nAfter sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows\, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands. \nEnroute to the Sandy Hook Light\, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock\, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor\, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries. \nCruising on the Ambrose Channel\, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo\, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill\, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico. The Atlantic Highlands is home to one of the most spectaular lighthouses in America: the Navesink Twin Light Station\, the very first structure in America witnessed by immigrants following an Atlantic crossing. \nUpon our return along the Ambrose Channel into Lower New York Bay\, we head near to the Coney Island Lighthouse at Norton’s Point in Seagate\, Coney Island\, where famed Keeper Frank Schubert\, NYC’s last Light Keeper\, resided for 40 years. We are also treated to a memorable image: the bright and powerful lens emanating from Staten Island’s Rear Range Light\, located atop Richmond Hill. \nTickets are non-refundable. \nLighthouse Boat Tours commence rain or shine. \nThe boat leaves from the NYC Ferry-Fast Ferry Dock. The boat does not leave from the National Lighthouse Museum. 1 Bay Street is a large general area which includes the St. George Ferry Terminal and the Empire Outlets.
