SUMMARY:The Lower New York Harbor\, and Ambrose Channel to Sandy Hook and Atlantic Highlands\, New Jersey Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Lower New York Harbor\, and Ambrose Channel to Sandy Hook and Atlantic Highlands\, New Jersey Tour\nSunday\, August 6th • 11am-2pm \nFERRY DIRECTIONS:\nDO NOT GO TO THE NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM. The “Fast Ferry” pier is located on the water\, by the 1 Bay Street general area which includes the St. George Ferry Terminal and the Empire Outlets. The “Fast Ferry” pier does not have its own address. Google Maps will take you to the general area to find parking either at the Empire Outlets or St. George Ferry Terminal. Please refer to our walking map to find the pier: https://lighthousemuseum.org/boat-tours/ The pier is located at the end of Wall Street behind the Ferry Hawks Stadium. You cannot park at the “Fast Ferry” pier\, but you can drop people off at the end of Wall Street. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY TO PLAN FOR PARKING AND WALKING TO FAST FERRY. Call the National Lighthouse Museum prior to Boat Tour to ask for further explanation if need be. \nPopularly regarded as NLM’s “Signature Tour” this exciting boat tour\, familiarizes passengers with key lighthouses that facilitate safe passage from the Atlantic Ocean into Lower New York Harbor. \nWe explore a total of nine lighthouses: Battery Weed Light located atop Fort Wadsworth\, the Coney Island Lighthouse\, West Bank and Romer Shoals Lighthouses\, the Sandy Hook Light\, The Twin Lighthouses of Navesink at Atlantic Highlands\, the Staten Island Rear Range at Richmond Hill\, the New Dorp Light\, and the Elm Tree Beacon at Miller Field\, also located in New Dorp. \nAfter sailing past historic Forts Wadsworth and Hamilton at the Narrows\, we head under the Verrazano Bridge passing the former Quarantine stations of Hoffman and Swineburn Islands.\nEnroute to the Sandy Hook Light\, situated near the tip of an eight mile spit at Fort Hancock\, a coastal defense base that once guarded the approach of NY Harbor\, we learn about the role that this proud and historic beacon has played on behalf of NYC’s maritime trade and its commerce over the centuries. \nCruising on the Ambrose Channel\, Sandy Hook Bay and the Shrewsberry River we journey along the Atlantic Highlands past the towns of Keyport and Leonardo\, home to Naval Weapons Station Earle and the world’s longest pier as well as Mount Mitchill\, the highest point on the Atlantic coast from Maine to the Yucatan in Mexico. The Atlantic Highlands is home to one of the most spectaular lighthouses in America: the Navesink Twin Light Station\, the very first structure in America witnessed by immigrants following an Atlantic crossing. \nUpon our return along the Ambrose Channel into Lower New York Bay\, we head near to the Coney Island Lighthouse at Norton’s Point in Seagate\, Coney Island\, where famed Keeper Frank Schubert\, NYC’s last Light Keeper\, resided for 40 years. We are also treated to a memorable image: the bright and powerful lens emanating from Staten Island’s Rear Range Light\, located atop Richmond Hill. \n*Combo Ticket Available: $75 for adults/$50 for children.\nIncludes Boat Tour\, National Lighthouse Museum admission and SI Ferry Hawks 4:00 pm Baseball Game. \nSOLD OUT!

SUMMARY:Newark Bay Tour with 9/11 Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Newark Bay Tour with 9/11 Tribute\nSunday\, September 10th • 11am-2pm \nFERRY DIRECTIONS:\nDO NOT GO TO THE NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM. \nThis exciting tour of Newark Bay\, the city of Newark\, Bayonne and Jersey City also includes up close visits to four famous memorials that pay solemn tribute to the victims of 9/11: the city of Bayonne’s “Tear Drop Memorial” the two giant waterfall memorials that comprise the footprints of the World Trade Center\, St. George\, Staten Island’s strikingly dramatic and soaringly wing-like tribute to the 274 Staten Island victims who lost their lives on 9/11 entitled: “Postcards\,” designed by noted New York architect Masayuki Sono\, and the beautiful “Empty Sky Memorial” located next to Jersey City’s famed Central Railroad Terminal at Liberty State Park designed by Jessica Jamroz and Frederick Schwartz. \nIn 1928\, at its economic and cultural zenith\, Newark\, New Jersey stood proudly as America’s fourth wealthiest city. By this time\, Newark\, had produced a dazzling array of achievements few cities could rival: an advanced transportation infrastructure including a subway\, America’s first commercial airport\, a massive and flourishing iron and steel industry\, one of America’s greatest concentrations of beer brewing\, nationally recognized retail stores\, and a wide range of commercial\, civic and cultural accomplishments – all of which catapulted New Jersey’s most populous city to the forefront of American urban life. \nAlthough the city has lost a significant degree of its spectacular economic luster in the present day\, Newark’s incredible legacy of economic success and civic achievement is being re-energized\, and\, at present\, the city adjoining Newark Bay and the Passaic River has been experiencing an impressive degree of economic resurgence\, one spearheaded by its vital and ever expanding container port industry\, the most extensive and important port facilities to be found along the Atlantic coast of the US. \nOur tour highlights noted projects and sites of historic economic importance while also introducing us to specific container companies that are engaging new technologies that account for the rapid and tremendous success of this industry. \nWe further highlight impressive manufacturing\, cultural\, recreational and housing developments that are emerging all along Newark Bay the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers. \nAs we pull away from Fast Ferry Terminal between Empire Outlets and Ferry Hawks Ballpark\, we describe in detail the “Postcards” Memorial. We then sail up close and personal to Robbins Reef Lighthouse where we learn about the life and career of one of NYC’s legendary Keepers\, Kate Walker and the history of this famous NYC Lighthouse. \nFrom the Kill Van Kull\, we sail even closer to Zurab Tsereteli’s famed and powerful ten story tall sculpture\, “The Tear Drop Memorial” located at Bayonne’s Military Ocean/Cruise Terminal. It was donated by Russia under Vladimir Putin in 2005 to commemorate victims of the 9/11 attacks and the destruction of New York City’s World Trade Center. \nFrom Bergen Point\, where a major railroad bridge and the Bergen Point lighthouse once stood as symbolic gateways to Newark Bay\, we describe the history of both structures\, then head northwards past the Robbins Reef Yacht Club and Union Park\, up Newark Bay\, past the rapidly expanding giant container facilities of Port Elizabeth and Port Newark\, under the iconic Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge that connects Bayonne with Newark\, the beautiful Newark Bay (Vincent R. Casciano Bridge) and Kearny Point\, which\, today\, much like the Brooklyn Navy Yard\, has been converted into a dynamic center of commercial and manufacturing. Our tour also traces the history and vital role played by the popular Portuguese dominated Ironbound section\, which\, in the present day\, has helped to animate Newark’s current economic and cultural revival. \nThis tour includes an up close examination of the cities of Newark\, Bayonne and Jersey City as well as the history of Liberty Island that once comprised a part of the Oyster Islands. \nSince its installation in 1886\, the Statue of Liberty\, has not only served as a glorious symbol of liberty and friendship with France\, but as a fort\, a prison\, a notorious public gallows\, and\, as a lighthouse on behalf of the US Lighthouse Service. \nOur tour will be conducted by Wade R. Goria\, historian\, author\, and former professor of International Relations at New York University. He is the principal lecturer for all NLM boat tours. \n*Combo Ticket Available: $75 for adults/$50 for children. \nIncludes Boat Tour\, National Lighthouse Museum admission and SI Ferry Hawks 4:00 pm Baseball Game. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter Author Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1842\, Ida Lewis assumed the keeping of Lime Rock Light in Newport\, RI at the tender age of 15. Set against the backdrop of a country in turmoil and progress\, including the Civil War and the Women’s Suffrage Movement\, Ida’s seemingly unexceptional life took a drastic turn when the world discovered that she’d been silently saving the lives of countless sailors. \nFame took her in hand and\, overnight\, she became an international sensation. Something she neither wanted nor got accustomed to. THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER’S DAUGHTER was originally published under the title KEEPER OF LIME ROCK two decades ago. \nIt has been in continuous publication ever since and is currently under the imprint of Rowman & Littlefield. Filmmaker Nico Raineau has adapted a screenplay based on Skomal’s book\, to be produced as a major motion picture. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis
DESCRIPTION:Author Maria Smilios Book Signing & Q&A\n2:00pm-4:00pm\nPresentation at 2:30pm\nStaten Islanders were always the beacons of light and hope. The National Lighthouse Museum is located at the site of the Quarantine (1799-1858) which was the first municipal complex of hospitals and convalescent facilities to receive and detain the sick and dying immigrants\, entering New York Harbor. Heroic Staten Islanders accepted the onerous burden to care for these immigrants. \nThe inspirational author\, Maria Smilios of The Black Angels will be at the National Lighthouse Museum to discuss another Staten Island\, municipal hospital\, Sea View Hospital (1913-1961) which was pivotal in controlling the tuberculosis (T.B.) epidemic in N.Y.C. Maria recounts the story of the critical role of Southern\, Black nurses in the managed care at Sea View Hospital for the incurable\, patients with the wasting disease\, tuberculosis (T.B.). Later by 1940’s\, these “Black Angels” brought the cure of T.B. to the nation. \nMaria Smilios was born and raised in New York City. In 2016\, while working as a developmental editor for Springer Science she learned about this extraordinary story and became determined to tell it. She holds a Master of Arts in American literature and religion from Boston University where she was a Luce scholar and taught in the religion and writing program. Her work has appeared in The Guardian\, Narratively\, The Forward\, Lit Hub\, Writers Digest\, Dame Magazine\, The Rumpus\, and other publications. \n The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis is her first book. \nYou can find Maria at mariasmilios.com \nGet your tickets today!

SUMMARY:Iron & Ice: The Full Tale of the Titanic Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Talk & Book Signing with Author Kelly Skwarcan \nIron & Ice: The Full Tale of the Titanic is sure to captivate both those with no prior knowledge of the ship and long-time enthusiasts. Narrative in nature\, character-driven\, and tastefully detailed\, Iron & Ice is set apart by its exploration of previously-glossed-over topics and its fresh perspective on familiar ones. This book explores the Titanic’s “best-of” narratives\, divulges little-known facts\, and simplifies pedantic technicalities to render the iconic tale engaging and meaningful to the modern reader. \nWith Iron & Ice\, readers embark on a spellbinding journey that begins before the Titanic’s first sketches and ends over a century later in summer 2023. As one of the first books to connect the eerie parallels between OceanGate’s Titan submersible’s implosion and the Titanic disaster\, Iron & Ice forges new ground\, enthralling readers all the while. \nKelly Skwarcan is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame this year with plans to pursue graduate degrees in performance\, and thereafter\, counseling psychology. She is looking forward to a career intertwining her long-time love of the Titanic with the psychology of performance in deep-ocean exploration and submergence expeditions. \nGet your tickets today!

SUMMARY:Paintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Lighthouses of the United States\nPaintings by Alfred La Banca Exhibit \nApril 28-May 26\, 2024\nOpening Reception April 28th at 2pm \nAlfred La Banca was born in New York City in 1930. His family spent summers in New Dorp\, Staten Island\, and so began his love for coastal communities. He owned three IOR-rated sailboats and competed from Maine to Florida – including Newport\, Annapolis\, Fort Lauderdale and Key West. \nLighthouses were his passion. He called them the “Vanishing Castles of America”. Sadly\, these beautiful marine castles are disappearing\, often abandoned or destroyed. It was the hope of Alfred LaBanca to rekindle America’s passion with lighthouses through his beautiful watercolor paintings. \nHis work has been selected for Ritz Carlton Hotels\, York Wallpaper and many local art shows. \nHe was a member of the United States Airforce\, New York Yacht Club\, New York Athletic Club Yacht Club\, Corinthians\, Storm Trysail Club and the Noroton Yacht Club. \nThe La Banca Lighthouse Collection has over 250 paintings. We hope you enjoy viewing this wonderful collection and perhaps think of Al LaBanca when you see a lighthouse.
