SUMMARY:Melissa’s Diary: An Erased American Hero
DESCRIPTION:In the treacherous waters off the coast of Maine during the late 1800s\, Melissa Colby Holden\, a woman of Native American heritage and indomitable spirit\, embarked on a daring journey that would forever alter the course of maritime history and women’s rights. This is not merely the story of Maine’s only permanent female lighthouse keeper\, but a testament to the power of one woman’s refusal to be erased by a male-dominated world determined to silence her voice. \nThis is not a story about a woman who needed saving. This is a story about a woman who helped change history and refused to be erased. \nBased on true events\, this Life’s Diary chronicles a remarkable woman’s journey through love\, loss\, tragedy\, innovation\, and triumph. From the windswept isolation of Mark Isle Lighthouse to the bustling streets of Washington\, D.C.\, Melissa’s story unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly changing America\, one where women were fighting for their most basic rights while men in positions of power sought to maintain the status quo at any cost. \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:The Staten Island Ferry\, A History with Patricia Salmon
DESCRIPTION:For more than four hundred years ferries have operated on the waterways that surround Staten Island. Native Americans ran primitive ferries as did the seventeenth century founders of the island. Many modern day courses actually followed their original routes. With the establishment of the Staten Island Ferry run from Saint George to Whitehall in Manhattan in 1886\, ferry service changed drastically. Discover the world’s most famous floating icon! \nPatricia Salmon is a professional historian and naturalist. She writes books that are filled with verified fascinating facts and commentary that appeal to all interested in community history. Ms. Salmon knows what her audience wants and for this reason she searches for history’s hidden secrets. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Sculptured Landscapes Shaped by Glaciers Presentation
DESCRIPTION:An Endless Inspirational Muse for Artists and Scientists\nPresented by College of Staten Island Faculty:\nDr. Robert Marraccino\, Dr. Richard Veit and Kevin Schreck \nDon’t miss opportunity to see the Melting Age Exhibit! \n“Antarctic Voyage” is a new documentary from award-winning filmmaker Kevin Schreck about a biological research expedition to the remote island of South Georgia\, starring charismatic field biologist\, Dr. Samantha Monier. \nDr. Richard Veit is broadly interested in the ecology of birds\, with special emphasis on foraging behavior of seabirds and long-distance dispersal and vagrancy of birds in general. He will discuss his research on climate effects upon seabirds and marine mammals. \nDr. Robert Marraccino explores the impact of the last glacial age\, which shaped Staten Island’s landscape. Around 25\,000 years ago\, melting glaciers carved features like the Staten Island Expressway’s route\, flat terrains\, and kettle lakes in Clove Lakes Park and Brady’s Pond. \nPurchase Tickets!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.

SUMMARY:State of the Harbor with the Billion Oyster Project
DESCRIPTION:Billion Oyster Project is a New York City-based nonprofit organization on a mission to restore 1 billion oysters to NYC’s Harbor by 2035 through restoration and education initiatives. Oysters provide a number of beneficial effects for the ecosystem including filtering water via filter feeding\, increasing habitat for other animals\, and protecting shorelines from storm surges. \nLearn about the state of the harbor from Billion Oyster Project staff\, and how you can get involved in restoration efforts in your area. \nZeke King Phillips grew up in (mostly) land-locked Pennsylvania\, but always dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. He studied geosciences in college\, focusing on paleontology\, and is currently working on a graduate degree in geosciences\, ecology\, and climate science. He’s also interested in science-focused public outreach\, community engagement and is super excited to be involved with community science. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Professor Joseph Henry and His Work with the USLHS Depot
DESCRIPTION:With speaker Dr. Michael Vigorito \nProfessor Joseph Henry (1797–1878)\, a pioneering American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, made significant contributions to both scientific innovation and public service. \nAt the U.S. Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island\, Henry spearheaded efforts to modernize America’s lighthouse system. His experiments and innovations enhanced maritime safety by improving lighthouse technology. \nHenry also recognized the importance of meteorological data for public safety\, laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau. His contributions reflect a legacy of using science to advance both public welfare and knowledge\, particularly at the intersection of maritime safety and meteorology. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito has been a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at Seton Hall University since 1989. He received his doctorate in Experimental Psychology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and post-doctoral training in behavioral pharmacology at Rutgers University. \nPurchase Ticket!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.

SUMMARY:Queen Elizabeth 2:  Ship Of Legend with Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\, in person and Zoom \nWhen the original Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth were retired in the late Sixties\, it was largely believed crossing the Atlantic by ocean liner was over. The airlines had taken as much as 98% of all passengers. But Britain’s Cunard Line felt differently and built one last Atlantic super liner. Thus\, came the ship which became the most successful liner of all time\, the Queen Elizabeth 2.  Fondly known as the QE2\, she went on to sail for 39 years\, steamed more miles\, visited more ports and carried more passengers than any other liner of her kind. Now residing as a hotel & museum out in Dubai\, Bill Miller will review the ship’s long and colorful history. \nBill Miller\, known as Mr. Ocean Liner\, has written over 100 books on passenger ships.  He is also a popular guest speaker on modern-day cruise ships\, having made hundreds of voyages and visited ports from Alaska to Antarctica. He has also hosted ocean liner events at Lincoln Center\, been a curator at South Street Seaport\, appeared in numerous television programs\, and been the recipient of numerous awards.
