SUMMARY:Professor Joseph Henry and His Work with the USLHS Depot
DESCRIPTION:With speaker Dr. Michael Vigorito \nProfessor Joseph Henry (1797–1878)\, a pioneering American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, made significant contributions to both scientific innovation and public service. \nAt the U.S. Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island\, Henry spearheaded efforts to modernize America’s lighthouse system. His experiments and innovations enhanced maritime safety by improving lighthouse technology. \nHenry also recognized the importance of meteorological data for public safety\, laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau. His contributions reflect a legacy of using science to advance both public welfare and knowledge\, particularly at the intersection of maritime safety and meteorology. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito has been a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at Seton Hall University since 1989. He received his doctorate in Experimental Psychology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and post-doctoral training in behavioral pharmacology at Rutgers University. \nPurchase Ticket!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.

SUMMARY:Melissa’s Diary: An Erased American Hero
DESCRIPTION:In the treacherous waters off the coast of Maine during the late 1800s\, Melissa Colby Holden\, a woman of Native American heritage and indomitable spirit\, embarked on a daring journey that would forever alter the course of maritime history and women’s rights. This is not merely the story of Maine’s only permanent female lighthouse keeper\, but a testament to the power of one woman’s refusal to be erased by a male-dominated world determined to silence her voice. \nThis is not a story about a woman who needed saving. This is a story about a woman who helped change history and refused to be erased. \nBased on true events\, this Life’s Diary chronicles a remarkable woman’s journey through love\, loss\, tragedy\, innovation\, and triumph. From the windswept isolation of Mark Isle Lighthouse to the bustling streets of Washington\, D.C.\, Melissa’s story unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly changing America\, one where women were fighting for their most basic rights while men in positions of power sought to maintain the status quo at any cost. \nRegister Today!
