SUMMARY:Storytime Hour: Reading of Kate's Light
DESCRIPTION:Readings at 11am and 12pm \nReading of Kate’s Light\, a story about Kate Walker at Robbin’s Reef Lighthouse by Elizabeth Spires (Author)\, Emily Arnold McCully (Illustrator). \nLiving in the isolated Robbins Reef Lighthouse\, overlooking turn-of-the-century New York Harbor\, Kate Walker spent her life minding the light\, keeping passing ships from running aground on the dangerous shoals. Originally the assistant to her lighthouse keeper husband John Walker\, after his death Kate convinced the Lighthouse Board that she was able to manage the hard work on her own. \nFor more than three decades\, Kate lived a solitary life\, often totally isolated from the mainland by rough seas and dangerous storms. Tending to the lamps and ringing the heavy warning bell\, she helped ships avert disaster– and saved many sailors from the cold\, choppy waters when disaster struck. \nElizabeth Spires describes the joys and hardships of a life at sea\, detailing pivotal moments in Walker’s life to show her indomitable spirit\, and celebrates the determination that drove Kate to keep her home and her livelihood. Paired with Emily Arnold McCully’s atmospheric\, vivid watercolor-and-ink illustrations of lonely lighthouses\, sun-dappled afternoons\, and wrathful storms\, this gripping picture book brings turn of the century New York to life. \nBooks will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Fathom
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit runs from December 14th to January 8th \nOpening reception on December 14th from 5pm- 7pm \nFathom is a video installation that explores the mercurial experience of time passing and the impermanence of life. Set in a dreamlike\, transitional space—part waiting room\, part ship at sea—the work evokes a sense of suspension\, with figures paused\, waiting\, and watching. Through their actions\, the boundaries between measuring time and space blur\, reflecting the paradox that after events pass\, only memories persist\, hovering between the tangible and the ephemeral. \nThe title\, Fathom\, embodies this duality. Rooted in its nautical origins as a unit of depth—once defined by the span of a sailor’s outstretched arms—it also invites the viewer to “fathom” or contemplate the immeasurable: time\, memory\, and absence. The work is both a meditation and a memento mori\, like staring at the sea—immense\, beautiful\, unknowable. \nAbout the Artist: Caleb Hammond is a creator of performance and visual art. He is an actor\, director\, and video and installation artist whose work has been performed and exhibited nationally and internationally. In his original works\, he explores fragmented and layered imagery\, using multiple exposure techniques to create environments that shift and slip\, providing viewers with surprising\, multifaceted experiences. His work examines the scale and shape of the spaces we inhabit\, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior\, monumental and mundane events\, expansive and empty spaces\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:Professor Joseph Henry and His Work with the USLHS Depot
DESCRIPTION:With speaker Dr. Michael Vigorito \nProfessor Joseph Henry (1797–1878)\, a pioneering American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, made significant contributions to both scientific innovation and public service. \nAt the U.S. Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island\, Henry spearheaded efforts to modernize America’s lighthouse system. His experiments and innovations enhanced maritime safety by improving lighthouse technology. \nHenry also recognized the importance of meteorological data for public safety\, laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of the U.S. Weather Bureau. His contributions reflect a legacy of using science to advance both public welfare and knowledge\, particularly at the intersection of maritime safety and meteorology. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Vigorito has been a full-time faculty member of the Psychology Department at Seton Hall University since 1989. He received his doctorate in Experimental Psychology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and post-doctoral training in behavioral pharmacology at Rutgers University. \nPurchase Ticket!\nClick here for Flyer PDF.
