STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The National Lighthouse Museum, a 16-year-old work-in-progress, acquired a rich gift of handmade tools, blueprints and decorative objects made by a master craftsman who worked on its St. George waterfront site more than a century ago.
The Italian-born Carlo Porazzi was the chief carpenter and metalworker for the supply depot of the National Lighthouse Service from 1901 to 1931. The complex just a few hundred feet from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, will house the museum, due to open late this fall.
The donated artifacts came from Arturo Porazzi, a grandson of the carpenter and a lifelong Shore Acres resident. As his family's unofficial archivist, Porazzi recently rediscovered the tools and other material in storage in his home.
